This Week At Hodgkinson Mar 5th

Last week, the Budget was announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak, unvailing a raft of measures designed to support the housing market. Amongst these was a new Mortgage Guarentee System for first-time buyers and an extension to the existing stamp duty holiday.

The threshold at which buyers start paying stamp duty was temporarily raised from £125,000 to £500,000, in England and Northern Ireland, last July. The deadline for this has now moved to June 30th 2021.

And to avoid a ‘cliff edge’ when this period ends, the tax-free threshold will then drop from £500,000 to £250,000 for an additional three months, bringing us up to the end of September.

The threshold for the nil rate band will fall back to its usual level of £125,000 on 1 October.
